Staining concrete gives it a richness and luminosity that cannot be easily achieved by any other color treatment. Stained concrete has an ethereal, almost translucent tone that varies depending on the texture it is applied to and the application techniques used. The results mimic polished marble, wood, or even natural stone, and are incredibly beautiful.
Stained concrete treatments fall into two main categories: acid-based and water-based stains. The applications vary depending on the functionality of your space. Both types of concrete stain can be applied to either existing or newly poured concrete. They are affordable and cost-effective methods for revitalizing old surfaces within the home or in commercial buildings. Stained concrete surfaces also provide durability and UV stability, making them ideal for interior or exterior concrete treatments.
Uses for decorative stained concrete include:
- Family room floors
- Custom decorative sidewalks and patios
- Kitchen countertops
- School corridors
- Vertical surfaces such as walkway borders or fireplace surrounds

What is an Acid-Based Stain?
Acid-based concrete stains are a mixture of water, acid-soluble metallic salts, and hydrochloric acid. They penetrate the surface of a concrete overlay and react chemically with the calcium hydroxide present in the concrete to create stained concrete. Once the stain reacts, it becomes a permanent part of the concrete and won't peel, chip, or fade. The color palette for acid-etch staining offers earthy tones and soft blue-greens.
What is a Water-Based Stain?
Just like acid-based stains, water-based stains penetrate the concrete overlay to produce permanent color. The finish ranges from opaque to translucent, giving the customer more extensive choice and variety. Water-based concrete stains come in many shades and colors. Black and white are standard, and recently metallic tints are gaining in popularity. The color is typically composed of pigments and acrylic polymers.
How Durable Is Stained Concrete?
Stained concrete has a long lifespan, but it will require careful maintenance to keep your installation beautiful and durable. If installed on the floor, minor regular cleaning is all that is necessary. Use a broom or vacuum cleaner, followed by a wet mop with a mild detergent. Although not susceptible to fading, scratches, or worn finish, we recommend sealing or waxing your floor or surface at least once a year. Sealing will keep your concrete looking and performing at its best. This treatment and maintenance program is especially important in high traffic areas such as schools or office buildings.
We do not recommend DIY installations for stained concrete floors, kitchen countertops, or other surfaces. The chemicals used to install these concrete products, and the expertise required, demand a professional contractor like Emerald City Concrete. We will ensure that you get a durable, professionally installed, functional concrete product.
